With Republicans like these, who needs Democrats?

The Republican Party can't seem to get out of its own way these days.

They've got the top Pataki basher, Tom Golisano, as one of their favorites for the governor's race next year. The other favorite is a guy who was the governor of another state.

Even John Sweeney is emboldened enough to take shots at the leadership over its nomination process. I don't know why. If he doesn't like who they endorse, he'll just shut down the counting of the ballots when his candidate gets ahead.

And poor Jeanine Pirro. A competent, home-grown New York Republican aspires to run for U.S. Senate, and the GOP is mad at her. Then again, if I was about to be led into slaughter against Hillary Clinton, I think I'd take Joe Bruno's advice and run for state attorney general. But given the current state of affairs in the party, they may not be able to get her elected dog catcher.
